Mutant Fest 2026 - Pacific Northwest July Forest Festival
Every summer, somewhere deep in a forest on public lands in Washington, Oregon, or Northern California, a village appears out of nowhere. No tickets. No fences. No corporate sponsors. Just a few thousand people hauling in sound systems, and building something together from scratch.
That's Mutant Fest — the Autonomous Mutant Festival — and it's happening July 6–15, 2026.
I'm going. Ten days in the woods with 10+ legendary sound systems, non-stop dance floors, live performances, skill-share workshops, and carefully crafted chill zones. Completely free and non-commercial. The location isn't announced until partway through the festival so the big sound rigs can get in first.
What it actually is
Mutant Fest is a DIY festival built on a simple idea: don't ask permission, just bring something. Musicians, artists, builders, healers, cooks, engineers; everyone contributes something and the festival emerges from that collective effort. There's no lineup announcement, no merch booth, no VIP section. It's a "fantastical village created deep in a beautiful forest," and that description is genuinely accurate.
If you've been to other gatherings like this you'll know the feeling; arriving somewhere that only exists because a bunch of people willed it into existence. Mutant Fest is that, but older and weirder and very much its own thing.
What you need to bring
This isn't a regular festival where you show up with a wristband and buy overpriced food. You are entirely self-sufficient out there:
- All your food and water for the full duration
- Shelter (tent, tarp, whatever works for you)
- Bear spray is recommended
- Fire permits are required and fire safety is strictly enforced
- Pack out everything you bring in (no trash service)
It's a real wilderness experience, not a glamping situation.
Come with us
I'll be out there for the run of it. If you're interested in going (whether you've done something like this before or it's completely new to you) come find me first. We can coordinate, caravan out together, and figure out the logistics as a crew.
The best place to reach me is on the Soniare Discord:
Drop in, say you're interested in Mutant Fest, and we'll figure it out from there.
I'll be playing some music with Auwen software and I might bring my own little battery powered sound system (8 inch subs + soundboks tops).
See you in the forest.
